Thoughts of Geigue

The original picture comes from a game called "Mother," called "Earthbound Zero" by some fans.  It is the first game of a trilogy, yet the only game released outside of Japan was the second in the series, "Mother 2," which was retitled "Earthbound" in North America.  In that title, the final boss was Giygas, a manifestation of pure evil.  However, its origins were never truly explained in Mother 2.  In the first game, it was the all-powerful alien know as Geigue.  It had come to earth to prevent humanity from obtaining the ability to use PSI, or Psionics.  However, it itself had been raised as an infant by two abducted humans- George and Maria.  Having formed a close bond with them, it was forced to suppress his love of them and destroy Earth.

Geigue was, however, defeated by their descendent, (with love, by the way), and vowed to return as a more powerful being.  His transition from a supernatural being to a purely evil force is never shown or explained, but it is assumed by fans that it was a form of torture, destroying a majority of its personality and self to become something beyond human comprehension, and its final demise was that which it had disposed of - emotion.  Something in which the game aims to evoke from the viewer, a rare trait found in games.

I always kind of felt sorry for Geigue/Giygas.  It had been given a brief period of love, but then was forced to dispose of it, and became something purely evil.  Its life was tragic without love in its life, and it met such an end.  Yet that is why it remains one of my favorite characters from the series.  It isn't a villain necessarily because it is evil- it is because it is devoid of the very thing it longs for.
